Simple Steps For Cactus Identification
Published by admin | Filed under Home and Family
Cacti are beautiful thorny plants, which are normally seen in the desert regions of America. It is surprising to note that even though cactus thrives in the United States, most Americans don’t even know the basics of cactus identification process. Contrary to popular belief, cacti are those plants, which can be easily identified. By following some simple steps, anyone can identify a cactus plant. The first and foremost step involved is the fact that cacti are those plant varieties, which are normally named as “succulents”.
This is the most important step involved in cactus identification. These plants normally are fleshy from insides and slightly woody from outsides. Most of them comprise of ribbed sides, which normally provide shade for cactus. The cactus basically stays inert during the winter season shedding fine roots and normally keeping their pores closed during the night. Normally, these plants grow at a slow rate and survive for a period from 50 years to 200 years.
Deep Study of Cactus Plant:
For embarking on a deep study of a cactus plant, it is important to study the root system of the tree. This would at least give a brief idea on the cactus identification process and would at least provide a clue on the water collecting methods for the sustenance of the plant. Normally, the root system of the plant is relatively short, shallow and widespread. Since the cactus plant thrives in the desert, it would be able to collect water in as much quantity as possible within a small amount of time. Hence, it comprises of feeder roots, which are situated at a depth of approximately ? inches beneath the soil. The third step involves having a look on the stem of the plant. Although, the cactus plant comes in abundant variety of sizes and shapes, there are some cactus identification attributes, which are commonly observed across all cacti species. For instance, the cactus plant has a waxy skin, which makes them relatively water-proof. In addition, the cactus plant also contains minute pores, which open during night for exchanging the gases, which close at daytime for sustaining moisture.
More Cactus Identifying Steps:
The fourth step involves noticing the distinguishing factor between the other species of trees and the cactus plant. Instead of foliage, which is normally observed in conventional plants, the cactus identification also comprises of variety of spines, which change their texture and shape. While some are hooked, the others are straight. These can either be sharp, soft or long. Normally, cacti comprise of an ‘areole’, which normally contain a couple of opposing buds. From the top, either side shoot or flower grows, and the spines grow from the bottom.
